Food For The Soul, Food For the Brain: My Favourite Books

Books! I read quite a lot and books are food for my brain. Here are my favourite brain feed, most of them are old school, that notwithstanding I enjoy reading them over and over without ever getting bored. Some of them, I read just once and the impact has been lifelong. 1. The Bible Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. This book authored by God through some ordained peoople contains instructions on having a fulfilling life and enjoying a relationship with God. It also has expert advice on love, relationships, parenting and inter human coexistence. Its a book you should read daily. Its more of food for the soul. 2. Pilgrims Progress Authored by John Bunyan, this book is a timeless classic. It chronicles the adventures a believer embarks upon from the moment he becomes a christian to the time he walks into eternity. The symbolism employed in this book is genius. 3. John Ploughman's Talk This comes highly recommended from me to you. Its aptly a book of commom sense. My dad t

To The Child That I Was

Today is children's day in Nigeria, its a no school day for kids and here am I in the office wishing the same privileges were extended to me. With Childhood blurring behind me with every day I wake, I feel its appropriate to pay tribute to that Child that contributed alot to the man am becoming. To the child that I was, cheers! I had the awesomest childhood ever, there was never a dull moment (actually there were quite a few esp the times I cried). Sometimes, I wonder how come I was so emotional as a kid, cry cry baby and all that, am not and will never be ashamed of the kid I was because all the tears I shed when I was bullied have drained my future reserves of tears. I can't recall the last time I shed tears, not because am now an emotionless android but because tears are not to be wasted anymore. There were many happy moments I had as a child, from my days at primary school to my Shepherds'days. I remember my plans as a kid to build a business empire (which am findin

Show up - Do nothing - Go Home

The world keeps on spinning. At the the government facility where I work (my work involves doing almost nothing and observing a lot) I have the chance of observing the attitude of public servants to work. To be honest I don't even know when work starts here. Its as if there is a secret contest to see who comes latest. Oga shows up to work anytime after 11am, stays for an hour or two then jumps in his ride and leaves. As I write this its almost 8:30am and the office is as quiet as a cemetery  I can even run along the Halls and do some crazy dance moves, and no one will see (you get the picture?), I think one can run safely run nude if you are daring enough. Even when they show up to work, the office is on a slow grind. Too many people doing nothing and yet claiming they are busy. Except for special missions ( which I've not embarked upon yet) my duties are summarized thus: Show up- Do nothing - Go home, the most important thing is that you show, no matter how how brief. Th

My Middle/Upper Class Dreams

Oh my, I didn’t mention it did I? Well, am currently at Abuja at some government facility doing some top secret activity. It’s a 6 month stint. That’s all am cleared to say about my new job. That explains my little absence from my blog. Being in Abuja has afforded me the chance to observe many things, the ways and manners of the growing Nigerian middle class being at the heart of it. My job entails hobnobbing with the rich, high and mighty. The Nigerian middle class society is growing, think of the people brandishing Apples (not the fruit), blackberries (not the fruit again), the folks that mill in and out of shoprite.  Most of the members of this small army of Bentley riding and Camry driving folks are those who were hardworking and lucky enough to be at the right places at proper time when wealth was created. For a rural dude like me, it’s very easy to spot out a Middle/upper classer, just as easy as it is for them to spot me out. At my residential base, despite my deep cov

Fantasia

Poetry. Yes poetry, though am not too big a fan of it, am quite close to some big time poets. Apart from the fact that I think Poetry gives people the license to say vile things and go free, I think poetry leaves the poets vulnerable, having laid bare their innermost thoughts and thinkings, plus the poet is always misunderstood. Well, let me shut up already. Here is a poem of mine from last year that I enjoy reading. Please go ahead and enjoy! Fantasia I am stuck in my head The sky is blue and I can’t get to bed Pretty thoughts are floating past While I stare with closed eyes Singing pineapples and cheering apples make the calming soundscape Laughing toddlers running around paint this ethereal landscape Heavy atmosphere dripping with love Heavenly atmosphere in my head from above Tame lions and wild goats skipping happily All part of this great mental family Fair maidens waving Grace in their walk, love in their eyes. Wisdom's words teaching

Nigerian banks: So much hype, so little groundwork.

This events chronicled herein truly occurred as the world spun past this morning. Today I took it upon myself to pay up all individuals and groups I was indebted to. This involved visiting three big time Nigerian banks. These transactions which could have simply been carried out with my PC, had to be done the old school way because online transactions are not common (no one I know has ever used the system), hence it could n''t be trusted. Aside the long queues and the ages it took to get served, these banks are are quite in contrast with what you'd see in the slick adverts on CNN or NTA (Nigerian Banks do ads on CNN). The staff are not that friendly, and you can waste a lot of productive time just waiting for your turn ( I kill time watching TV whenever I visit a bank) In one of the Banks I visited, (this bank boasts of ''Pan- African ess'' ) the bulk room where I went to pay in money was desecrated with graffiti on the side boards. Yes! Graffiti, scra
